Shuttle, Spin, Ravel and Roll

Fleece with flair

A new exhibition titled Shuttle, Spin, Ravel and Roll was recently opened in  the Living Arts Space at the Bendigo Visitor Centre, winner in the category of  Visitor Information and Services at the 2011 Qantas Australian Tourism Awards.

The Living Arts Space was established by the Visitor Centre in 2010 to showcase the talents of local arts practitioners from Bendigo and region. It is situated in the historic building formerly used as the Post Office, right in the heart of Bendigo, featuring beautiful Victorian architecture and interiors with highly decorative plaster and timberwork making it very well suited to its new purpose.

The current exhibition presents a delightful and colourful array of works made from wool by four local artists and designers. Bonnie Mitchell, Michelle Lawler, Helena Richardson-Collins and Glenis Beaumont have each created distinctive and sensuous items using different techniques such as hand-loom weaving, machine and hand knitting, dying and felting.  The pieces have sometimes involved combining wool in its various forms with other materials in unique and creative ways.

Also on display is furniture made from Australian timber by local craftsman, Simon Wilson. These modern, well-defined and beautifully crafted timber pieces complement the textiles on show.

Glenis Beaumont, who produces exquisite hand-woven articles, will be giving a ‘Hand-Loom Weaving Demonstration and Floor Talk’ on Saturday 11 August commencing at 10.30am and all are welcome to attend this free event.

The exhibition will continue until Sunday 14 October 2012. The Living Arts Space is located inside the Bendigo Visitor Centre in the historic Post Office Building, Pall Mall. The centre is open 9am to 5pm everyday of the year, except Christmas Day.
